The Pacific Northwest is known for its odd weather.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I was wearing a short-sleeve shirt and driving back to the office from my lunch break with my window down. (Of course, my heater was on, too, but it was a “B-E-A-utiful day,” as Jim Carrey would say…)
Yesterday, we got pounded. In some areas, two feet (or more!) of snow fell on the ground! I took some time last night to shovel off my above-ground deck, to take the weight off the surface – and by the time I was done shoveling it off, another 2-3” of snow had fallen, covering the area I had just cleared! (Through it all, I was reminded of muscles I had forgotten I had, as shoveling took a lot longer than expected!)
At the same time, I was reminded about some wonderful parallels between snow and key Christian truths from Scripture:
- Snow is beautiful
– It’s not a lot of fun to shovel, and it’s not fun to drive in, but snow sure is beautiful to behold and experience! The muffled noises, millions of little flakes drifting to the ground, the snow-capped mountains in the distance – it’s just something special to behold.
Scripture reminds us that God has designed Christians to be beautiful to experience as well:
Galatians 5:22-23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” (NKJV)
- Snow is pure and white
– That’s one of the first things that you notice about snow…how white it is. As it falls from the sky, it produces an almost perfect blanket of “whiteness” on the ground. No matter what might be underneath it, for a moment it makes everything look pure, fresh, and clean.
Scripture uses the image of fresh snow to remind us what God does in our lives through Jesus Christ – not just for a moment, but for eternity:
Psalm 51:7b – “Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” (NKJV)
Isaiah 1:18 – “Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD, “Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool.” (NASB)
- Every snowflake is special
– It’s easy to look at snow and miss the uniqueness of each flake. In an amazing miracle, each snowflake starts off the same way – it has the same basic shape and design. But, as the flake goes through a cycle of heating and cooling, the flake takes on a more complex and unique shape, eventually leading to every flake being unique.
Like snow, every person starts off the same – being made in the image of God:
Genesis 1:26a – “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…’” (NKJV)
…but we’re also special and unique, with God personally involved in our development from conception:
Psalm 139:13-14a – “For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made.” (HCSB)
Jeremiah 1:5a – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…” (NKJV)
…and God uses the struggles we go through in life to uniquely shape and mold us:
Romans 5:3-4 – “And not only that, but we also rejoice in our afflictions, because we know that affliction produces endurance, endurance produces proven character, and proven character produces hope.” (HCSB)
So, take time to enjoy the snow while it’s here – and let it serve as a reminder from our Father about how much He loves you, about how special you are, and about how He has made you beautiful in His sight.
Have a blessed evening!
